Bitcoin that were stolen from the exchange platform Bitfinex have been moved on the blockchain from the unknown perpetrator of the theft. The funds had been dormant for three years before this latest activity. $1.37 million in total were stolen from the exchange platform back in 2016. Over the course of yesterday, they were moved to various locations with the final transaction of $137,514 happening at 19:47 UTC yesterday evening. The stolen funds have been linked with Bitfinex’s Leo token, which enables the return of stolen crypto funds. However, these claims were denied by Bitfinex. With a spokesperson for the firm, Anneka Dew, stating, “We are not involved, and the movement is not tied to the procedure outlined in the UNUS SED LEO white paper.” However, more likely than not, the hacker sat on the funds waiting for the hype surrounding the crime to die down. Now, seizing their opportunity, the perpetrator has decided to act. The identity of whom is still unknown, with the crime remaining a mystery, with the funds no closer to being retrieved. This is the first activity the hacker has demonstrated since the original theft, which was one of the largest cryptocurrency hacks recorded.
