Dmitri Vasilyev has been arrested in Italy with no official statement released about why. While the exact reason Vasilyev has been arrested has not been made clear, he is no stranger to controversy. He was charged back in April 2019 for defrauding an investor in the city of Almaty in Kazakhstan to the tune of $20,000 through his now-defunct operation, WEX. This thus prompted an international arrest warrant for the 32-year-old. The opening of WEX exchange back in September 2017 came from the embers BTC-e, another exchange platform who are still in the midst of a $4 billion fraud investigation from the USA and Greece. The founder of which is still in custody of the latter’s authorities. WEX had other controversies despite this. They were involved in suspicious activity such as overpricing bitcoin and major exchange platform Binance, froze funds associated with WEX after it was claimed to be involved money laundering. Vasilyev joins a long line of crypto scammers who have seen their luck run out over the last few months. The only difference with Vasilyev is with such a lengthy record of dubious behaviour the question remains, what he has done this time.
