Norwegian Startup Empower is using a blockchain enabled system to reduce plastic pollution. Become plastic positive! says the company's website, "Empower is creating a solution to the plastic waste problem by giving plastic a value. We are cleaning up the world while fighting poverty by providing a wage to those in need." Empower founder Wilhelm Myrer comments that there are a lot of waste project opportunities in the world. NGOs, corporate businesses and government are prepared to pay for projects to reduce waste. The problem is the consumer, how to bring them? Myrer decided to implement blockchain to record and track waste across centres and distribution. "The blockchain provides our partners with information on how much has been brought in and when, and also rewards those who bring the plastic by issuing tokens" that equals $1 for every kilo of waste. "Empower is creating a plastic waste fund. This is used to pay people who deliver plastic waste to our stations. For every kg of plastic delivered, the person is rewarded a digital EMP Token worth $1." Empower was founded in January 2018 on the back of the Norwegian bottle deposit system. "By rewarding deposit of plastic waste we can both stop leakage of plastic into the environment, and incentivise collection of leaked waste." Creating a better and cleaner world The Startup is using technology in a circular economy that aims to create a cleaner world. "The use of Blockchain technology ensures full transparency. We are able to track and link every deposit of plastic back to the sponsor who made it possible!" The startup is at the end of its white paper developing route as it is in the implementation of waste reception and beach cleanups. Empower is now facing a global launching and the building of the ecosystem, just before the global scaling where every person in the world will have the possibility to join Empower to clean up all the plastic waste in the world. The company also aims to create "value for those who need it the most, reduce waste and fight poverty."
